Notes on Attending the Theatre

We suggest you read the "Audience" section directly to your class

The Audience

You can sit there and have a universal experience, of fear, of anger, of tears, of love, and I discovered that it’s the audience, really, that is doing the acting.

- Marlon Brando

Theater is a collaborative art form. The success of a production relies upon every member of the ensemble performing their role expertly, from the cast and crew to the administrative staff to the audience themselves. Come prepared to make your contribution as a member of the audience. You have an active role to play, and the performers are relying on you to be respectful and attentive. Months of preparation, weeks of rehearsal and hours upon hours of effort have gone toward providing the best possible performance for you. Your participation is what makes this process worthwhile.

Before the Performance

No food, drinks, candy or gum are permitted inside the theatre at any time. This includes any refreshments purchased at intermission. Please alert students to this policy so that they will not buy more than they can enjoy during intermission.

Electronic and recording devices should be placed in the off position. This includes hand-held games, cell phones, mp3 players, pagers, and iPods.

The use of cameras and other recording devices is a violation of the actor's contracts. We ask that you refrain from taking pictures during the production.

During the Performance

We ask that the teacher/chaperones sit among their students in various areas in order to encourage positive behavior.

Actors appreciate audience response that is appropriate to the play. By no means do we want to discourage laughter or applause during a performance. However, talking, whispering, shouting or any inappropriate responses which are disruptive to the actors or to the rest of the audience is not tolerated. If behavior problems arise we ask that a teacher or chaperone accompany the student to the theatre lobby where we ask they remain until the end of the play.

At the end of the performance, the actors will return to the stage for a curtain call. This is the opportunity for the audience to applaud and share their appreciation of the play.

After the Performance

All classes are encouraged to remain seated after the performance for a "talk back" with the actors. This is a time for the students to ask questions about the performance/production.

When leaving the theater, make sure you have all your belongings. Please gather any litter and dispose of it appropriately in the lobby.

Thank you for sharing these guidelines and etiquette with your students to assist them in making choices that will encourage their successful audience participation. We look forward to seeing you at the Theater.
